I was sorry to read about the recent passing of cartoonist Roy Raymonde. In my opinion Raymonde was the most underrated of the Playboy cartoonists. His style might not be as flashy or artsy as Cole, Sokol or Kiraz, but he was a fantastic cartoonist with great life, appeal and personality in his drawings.
Took me some time to appreciate his work as well, now I can't get enough of it. Not sure why that is, exactly.
Maybe because I always associated this school of cartoon drawing with the 1970's- That Tomi Ungerer style was everywhere when I was a kid, in advertising, school math books, etc. and at first glance it looks kind of generic, especially next to bold styles like Kiraz and Sokol.
When you look closer, though, all this great stuff starts popping out- funny and subtle expressions, body language, compositions, great hands, and the girls are really cute, despite having very few of the traditional "cute cartoon girl" elements. Take the last image, for example: broken nose, no boobs, thick waist and legs--and perfectly sexy.
d'accord... I was gripped with the dracula one. Those legs add hugely to his furlorn expression... his whole is the expression as it happens.. then when I went back I saw the face on the bloke far right on the first ('Mrs Furbelow is a customer') one and that was me convinced... a wonderful gawpy fizog on the lad.
Yeah, I really dig Raymonde. Thanks for sharing these, Shane. You're really doing great work helping to educate a lot of cartoonists. The younger generation thanks you a bunch!

Honestly I loved it as soon as I saw it! How could you two have hated this at any point in time!
ah these are very cool! - thanks for sharing!
Yes.. I also felt great sadness hearing about his demise. He was a superb artist who always drew with a twink in the eye.
OMG - these are awesome! I can't believe how beautifully painted they are - and hilarious! Thanks for putting these up!
Is there a place to see the whole collection?
Brillo Pad.
