Dokonjō Gaeru

ど根性ガエル Dokonjō Gaeru or "The Gutsy Frog." La Rana Valiente in Mexico. I recently spent a week in Tokyo and watched this every morning. Really cute show with tons of appeal and great exaggerated poses. It was animated by TMS and I believe Miyazaki worked on it.

I haven't been able to find episodes online either to purchase or download. I ordered a dvd from Japan, but it turned out to be a second series from the 1980's and the drawings are really sloppy compared to the original, which ran from 1972 to 1974.

Can anyone help me find this?

Hi! I live in Japan, and I checked Japanese Amazon and there are 2 Special DVD boxes (rather pricey) of Dokonjo Gaeru.

By the way, my own animation is on Youtube at Toyuki1! (Had to give myself a plug!)

Shane,
I really love your Cartoon Retro blog. You have great taste in what you post (but you do not post often enough). I find your links that are updated along the right side of the page especially useful. I often use your site as a gateway to other cool sites. Please come visit me too.

I wish I could help you Shane. The show alone seems like one I wished had been seen over here. Apparently our buds south of the border ended up getting this as "La Rana Valiente", though the opening and ending credits tend to be instrumentals of the original theme songs with English credits used (TMS seemed to have had a habit of doing that with all it's shorts regardless of whether or not English dubs were ever made for 'em).

While you do mention the possibility of Miyazaki working on this, I wasn't sure if he did myself, though a studio he was working for at the time, "A Productions" otherwise produced this for TMS. Miyazaki along with Takahata at A Pro would make "Panda Kopanda", whose design and look kinda reminds me of Gutsy Frog in many respects.

It's pathetic thinking guys like us get so interesting in stuff that's not remotely available anywhere here. TMS certainly has some pretty interesting programs that just never came over or have a chance to these days. I'm only glad for a few that slip through but it would be nice if some more did find their way here (like the first Lupin III TV series, which Miyazaki and Takahata co-directed on).

Holy crap, I remember this!

Cartoon Network's Japanese station used to run this all the time. I wish I taped them before I moved to the 'States.
