ど根性ガエル Dokonjō Gaeru or "The Gutsy Frog." La Rana Valiente in Mexico. I recently spent a week in Tokyo and watched this every morning. Really cute show with tons of appeal and great exaggerated poses. It was animated by TMS and I believe Miyazaki worked on it.

I haven't been able to find episodes online either to purchase or download. I ordered a dvd from Japan, but it turned out to be a second series from the 1980's and the drawings are really sloppy compared to the original, which ran from 1972 to 1974.

Can anyone help me find this?

Incredible drawing and staging. Blake is very underrated as a cartoonist. Tiger didn't have the warmth, wit or humanity of Peanuts, but it was a still a simple, fun strip with beautiful drawing. He can sure put shapes together.

I can't believe someone found Rock Lobster! I haven't seen it in years and have so far been unable to find where I stored the original pages.It was done back in the days of zipatone which in this digital age I don't think you can buy anymore. The all bold face word balloons crack me up. I guess I was saying that the comic was meant to be read LOUD! I remember that right after it was published I wanted to redo a couple of panels and basically the whole final page but now I'm not so sure about that. I was around 14 when I bought the Fantastic Art of Frank Frazetta, vol. 2 during summer vacation. I can still remember seeing his art for the first time, and the adrenaline rush that went through me. No other artist created such a strong emotional response in me, and I could think of little else for the next 10 years.

Frank Frazetta is far and away my favorite artist, painter, illustrator, and cartoonist, and the main reason I wanted to become an artist. No other person has had more of an influence on the way I think about drawing, composition, and shapes.

It is really cool to see all my work on the Spider-Ham backup stories in one place. It makes me wish they'd publish a collection. Interesting also to see the style/technique progression from Goose Rider to Secret Furs. Just when I felt I was getting in a groove, Marvel cancelled the book. You can find puzzle illustrations I did in old Games Magazines and a one shot I did called Rock Lobster in a publication called Pure Entertainment put out by a guy named Pete Friedrich (probably impossible to track down). There is a Spider-Ham article in a recent issue of Back Issue, so between that and this, it is nice to be rediscovered. Thanks for posting my stuff! Steve Mellor

Thanks for all the nice comments. My career in comic books was pretty brief. I never made a lot of money at it and being self-taught I was frequently frustrated by my own limitations. Being appreciated 25 years later (yikes!) and finding out that my work actually influenced and inspired other cartoonists makes me realize it was all worthwhile. Cartooning at its best can be one of the most personal of art forms. Like most of the things I've done in my Iife, I fell into and out of professional cartooning and maybe one of these days I'll actually get paid to do it again. Artistic Diversity & the Internet

I love the band The Cars, and recently read the following in an interview with Ric Ocasek:

AVC: It's hard to pinpoint any hard influences on The Cars besides old-time rock and maybe krautrock. What were you listening to then?

RO: As a songwriter, oddly enough, my influences were people like Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, and Buddy Holly. Some psychedelic stuff, too. Back then, there wasn't a lot of press on bands. There was Creem and Rolling Stone, and that was about it. There certainly wasn't the Internet. You would stay in your basement and create something and then come out. You didn't have anything to rub off on. You didn't know what the band down the street was doing, because you couldn't look it up, and you couldn't see it on TV. I think people tended to come out with things that were different because they weren't influenced by their environments as much. I find these days, you almost have to force yourself to stay in a vacuum to become different—if you really want to be different. Maybe you have to have something different inside of you as well.

This got me thinking about how this applies to art and cartooning. The internet has made available such a wide variety of material, but instead of creating diversity, it seems to have created a kind of "blandization" or homogenization in art, music, movies, and culture in general.

Milt Gross Dream Book

The Complete Milt Gross Comic Books and Life Story by Craig Yoe is my choice for book of the year.

Being obsessed with cartoons most of my life, I've often had dreams about finding wonderful cartoon books that never existed. I imagine Craig has had those dreams too, and he's now doing us all a huge favor by making them a reality.

When I first discovered Milt Gross at Spumco almost 20 years ago, I went on an obsessive search for all of Milt Gross' comic book stories, digging through dusty boxes at comic conventions and bookstores. His stories were usually well hidden in the backs of obscure old humor comics, and I had to open a lot of taped comic bags to search the contents, enduring the withering stares of the snotty dealers. When I found a new Gross story it was a real thrill, and I would then take them to work and enlarge them on the WB color copier, and put them into sleeves and binders in my first attempts to make my own cartoon books for myself and friends. Craig has saved you all that trouble and produced the ultimate Milt Gross book. He even found some stories I've never seen before.

I'm not going to go into the comics themselves- you either love Milt Gross or don't get it, but the book itself looks, feels, and even smells great. It really is a treat to hold. The reproduction, binding, layout and supplemental materials are all PERFECT. And I can't believe how cheap it is- $39.99, or $29.19 at Amazon.

Jack Cole: The Bob Clampett of Comics

Many years ago, when I was first getting into classic cartoonists, I would constantly read in interviews about the genius of Jack Cole. So every time a fancy hardcover comics compilation came out with reprints of Cole comics I would eagerly buy it, but I just couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. For some reason, every time these books and magazines reprinted Cole, they would pick the absolute worst of his comics- really early, crude artwork, and usually very badly reproduced or "restored." I knew and loved his Playboy cartoons, but could see very little of that quality in the comics.
It wasn't until many years later that I finally found the good stuff online, and it blew my mind- finally! The energy, layout, movement, drawing, strangeness and invention, just the sheer ENTERTAINMENT of it all was even more than I could've hoped for. Cole put EVERYTHING into these panels- just pure joyful fun and energy.

This is an incredible page: fantastic perspective in the first four panels- and check out that cart whipping around the corner in panel 3. How about Plas pinching Woozy's lips closed with his foot claw in panel four? Can't beat the combination of virtuosic ability with unique imagination.

I love the designs in Ralph Bakshi Terrytoons like James Hound and The Mighty Heroes. It's very distinct, very cartoony and very appealing. The style seems to have been influenced by the early MAD, especially Don Martin and Wally Wood, mixed with Weird-oh's model kits and maybe Chuck Jones' angular late- 1950's style. Wherever it came from, they are just fun to look at.

Most people skip over this stuff when discussing Bakshi, but I love these cartoons. The documentary on the new Mighty Mouse dvd has some pristine clips of The Mighty Heroes, so I hope someone is working on getting them out on dvd.

Chuck Jones: BARBARY COAST BUNNY

Another plug for the Chuck Jones blog. It's not only full of incredible drawings, but the "Chuck Jones' Letters to Linda" are filled with fascinating insight into Chuck's thought process during his most creative period. I especially enjoyed reading this section on the recording of Daws Butler and Mel Blanc for one of my favorite Jones cartoons, BARBARY COAST BUNNY:

I just returned from recording a new picture: BARBARY COAST BUNNY. I used a new actor, name of Daws Butler, in the role of the heavy. He’s a very clever guy, hard working, intelligent and refreshing. He’s the one who worked with Stan Freberg on all those records, they wrote and acted in them together.

I must say that I learned a great deal from him. He gave a splendid and new angle to this character, a sort of Marlon Brandoish mushy-mouthed delivery that seemed very funny to me. In Streetcar Named Desire Brando was a troglodyte but with his speech dotted with completely incongruous delicacies. This effort to attain elegance was what gave the character its odd twist, like an orangutan in an evening gown. So we rewrote the dialogue a little to fit this new conception and, as I say, it came off beautifully.

Another thing I noticed is that Mel Blanc, who was there to record the rabbit, was well aware that he has some competition from Daws. He really worked today. I have never seen him evidence more interest in his work. I think I shall hire a sort of stand-by talent on recording days if this is what the goad of rivalry does for Mel. Like others, I suppose, he is likely to get a trifle smug occasionally. All in all, a good day.

Chuck also writes about his next cartoon, another favorite:

I am on the backstretch of another story I think you will like. The one about the year when Mars approached so close to the earth that it affected a cosmic mix-up and a Martian baby was diverted to the earth while the Earth baby went by mistake to Mars. At any rate a pleasant average young married couple find themselves with an odd lightish green highly intellectual baby with a disconcerting knack of talking to bees. Before the babies are traded back we have quite a time for ourselves. I’m using a wholly new drawing technique for me, like the enclosed drawings, they’re rough but I think you can get the idea.

This cartoon turned out to be "Rocket bye baby", of course. I'd love to see those drawings! The style Chuck used for this cartoon is so perfect, very 1950's Hank Ketcham.

I was sorry to read about the recent passing of cartoonist Roy Raymonde. In my opinion Raymonde was the most underrated of the Playboy cartoonists. His style might not be as flashy or artsy as Cole, Sokol or Kiraz, but he was a fantastic cartoonist with great life, appeal and personality in his drawings.

I picked up an old vhs tape at Goodwill recently called "Davey Jones' Locker", featuring Bil Baird's marionettes and I can't believe how awesome the designs of the puppets are. They look like they were designed by Roy Nelson and Vernon Grant, which may not be a coincidence since Baird attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts around the same time as both and they clearly share a similar design sensibility.
I couldn't find any clips online and because It's a vhs tape I can't make any frame grabs, but I'm attaching a few Baird images found online (there isn't much) to hopefully motivate you to check out more.
I wish the current cgi movies had this variety in design. I can't figure out why all the girls in cgi movies have the exact same round head- the girls in Bolt, Monsters vs Aliens, and Cloudy Meatballs all seem like the same design, and the neck never attaches to the head right. Maybe it's a limitation of the technology, because the best character designers in the world worked on those movies.
You can buy a dvd of some of Baird's early films here. I recommend it highly.

Thanks for the comments on the previous Fitzgerald posts- Some great observations on what makes Owen's work so exciting.

There is much to admire about his work: drawing, inking, composition, storytelling, etc., but for me the most important element of his work is how bold and direct it is. Crystal-clear communication of the idea to the reader's brain. This is the common element of all great cartoonists, from Schulz to Herriman to Kurtzman to Kirby- their drawings read like writing- you "read" the drawings instantly, you get the point instantly. The poses, shapes convey attitude, movement, direction, and create rhythm and beats from one pose and panel to the next. The cartoon version of Kanji or sumi-e.

Or maybe he just drew really sexy women.

One of the benefits of working in an animation studio has to be all of the great artwork passed around. Thousands of pages of model sheets, character designs, animation drawings, and naughty pictures from all of the studios, from the 1940's through the present.

I probably spent more time at the copier than at my desk for the first couple months at Warner Bros. It was an overwhelming amount of beautiful artwork but out of all of it I think I got the most inspiration from four sources: Bruce Timm's pin-up drawings, John K.'s "headpiles" Tiny-Toons drawings, and especially the rough sketches of Dan Haskett and Lynne Naylor. The rhythm, flow, life and appeal in Naylor & Haskett's drawings blew my mind, and I knew that was what I wanted to achieve in my own work. I studied those drawings obsessively. Over the years my drawings have improved in many ways, but I feel like I've lost a lot of that animation influence, and I've gone back to those sources recently in hopes of getting back some of that graceful flow.

Rest in peace. I was an obsessed Michael Jackson fan as a kid. His performance in the "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" special is still one of the most mind-blowing things I have ever seen. A true artist and rare, once in a lifetime talent.
